Hammer time!

Someone on the internet asked whether a trick with a hammer, a ruler and an elastic band that appears to defy gravity was possible, and was there video evidence?

This was so quick to set up that I just did it. I used two elastic bands because one wasn’t strong enough to keep the hammer in contact with the ruler.

Nicely done. Guess it's a matter of finding balance points and ensuring there's enough friction to stop the hammer sliding.

It's surprisingly easy to find that balance; and I missed a trick in the video by having so much of the ruler on the table. Without too much trouble, you can balance the whole thing on just a few millimetres of ruler.
