Thawte Alternative?

Looks like a possible alternative to Thawte’s disappearing free e-mail certificates may be StartSSL, who are now providing free certificates and have a Web of Trust. I haven’t checked them out in any depth yet (this is partly a note to myself!), but they seem worth a look. Others seem to have had an OK experience, with some caveats.
