Didn't Orangina, which is a thoroughly modern drink, advise 'Shake the bottle, wake the drink'? 'Wake the drink' being a euphemism for 'send the drink cascading into the air and all up your arm', of course.
I've had an independent report of this lunacy from a visitor to the UK, so I think you must be right.
Having found Fentimans web site in order to add the link, I had a wander around and found someone else commenting on the same thing. There was a reply from the company along the lines that they preferred "Up end before pouring", but a significant proportion of consumers didn't understand. Sigh.
